I had a look on the German Wiki site about the F1.
They telling that they wanted to break the German domination at the Grand
Prix racing in the 30ies and created a new regulation in year 1947 and
called it "Formula 1" and added a F2 and F3 with smaller engine capathity.
The cars before '47 were Grand Prix cars, the cars after '47 were F1 cars.
The races before 1950 were a European racing. Since 1950 it became a World
championship.
Cheers
Chris

I always thought "Grand Prix" was a family of vehicles with certain
characteristics and that within the family umbrella you had the formula
1, formula 2, formula-V, formula Ford & so on. But then again I've
never been a serious student of race car classification.
