I would suggest NOT running any lines from the block / head to a tank
with a normal radiator cap. The block pressure is well above the
radiator pressure - the thermostat housing is the orifice that keeps
the block pressure high. Jack installed a radiator cap at the top of
the thermostat housing and kept losing all of his coolant through the
radiator cap's bypass until we figured this out and plugged the
bypass vent. So the rad cap in the thermostat housing was just a
means of filling the engine and was completely sealed once
filled. We still used the radiator's cap for venting down to a
reasonable pressure.

If you use an expansion tank and tie it to the heater port in the
head, 30+ psi water from the head will pressurize the tank. With the
pressure controlled as you describe I predict that you will loose
coolant due to this overpressurization.
