For the Sunday feature race, Dick took his spot in the 7th position. With
one minute to go, and everyones engines running, a SVRA official conducted
an investigation that resulted in Dick being penalized for passing under
yellow, moving him back to 15th place. While no one was happy with the
decision, Dick took his spot and was determined to quickly move through the
pack. At the green flag, Dick took off and had made up 8 positions by the
end of the 2nd lap. He then ran down the lead pack of cars of Dick Tillinger
(2L Datsun Roadster), Butch Mckenzie (MGB (ex Dave Headley car)), Bob
Colaizzi (Super 7), Logan Dernoshek (Yenko Stinger), Jim Froula (Datsun
Bluebird), and Bill Thumel (x-flow Elva Courier).. all of whom were running
nose to tail. Stockton hooked onto Tillingers bumper and both got by the
Stinger and were in hot pursuit of Mckenzie, Colaizzi, and Froula. Thumel,
who was leading at the time pulled off the track on lap 3 with an apparent
mechanical issue, which left a 5 car train to battle it out for the win. On
lap four Stockton and Tillinger both had a great run out of T1 and drafted
up onto Mckenzie and Colaizzi.. Tillinger went left and Stockton went right,
splitting the MGB and Super 7, with both drivers making hero passes on
Mckenzie and Colaizzi at the entrance of the bus stop. The running order was
now Froula (1st), Tillinger (2nd), Stockton (3rd), Mckenzie (4th), and
Colaizzi (5th). For the next two laps Stockton, Mckenzie and Colaizzi
swapped positions on almost every corner (I dont think you could have
slipped a paper between them), while a car length or two in front, Tillinger
was trying to find a way past Froula who had burned off his tires. Froula
eventually started falling through the pack. Stockton lost momentum getting
by Froula found himself in 4th place at the finish, just a few car lengths
behind Mckenzie (3rd), Colaizzi (2nd) and Tillinger (1st). Stocktons fast
lap was a 2.20.8 (in traffic).

While we could have done without the rain and all the drama, it was a pretty
successful weekend. Hopefully we'll be seeing more Triumphs at the SVRA NJMP
event in two weeks.

Bob
