Yes, too much end float, most likely the circlip, and also the circlip
has a slight offset on one end & it has to be fitted facing forward ie
away from the gear/thrust washer.

I agree it is the snap ring on the mainshaft.
Never use a used one, always new!
If you need to take it off, use another new one (buy several).
If you hold the shift lever to keep the tranny in gear and let off on
the
gas you'll notice the lever move (try to move). That is the gears
moving on
the mainshaft due to the snap ring coming out of the groove. There is a
thrust washer in there too that can get damaged.
