Chuck, I feel the stock J-type od unit is good as is. I used mine for
several years with out any problem. I had a problem with it this year and
found the problem wasn't the OD, but a tight bearing in the transmission.
This caused the oil to heat up and thin causing the OD to not engage after a
few laps. The following session it would work fine for several laps and
quit again. Very frustrating and hard to diagnosis.
I then put on a Volvo unit that I only clean the magnet and screen, and it
worked fine. I had used a A-type transmission and OD borrowed from another
racer and I didn't notice much difference except the A shifts up quicker and
the J shifts down quicker.
I read in an article regarding the J-type unit in a site for Volvos(maybe
turbobricks.com) that you can change the relief valve spring to give a high
pressure. I put a gauge on mine(J-type) and saw 450psi. I also use Redline
75w90ns oil in mine. I'm not sure how much you're looking for, but this
seemed adequate.
