I'm rebuilding the bits of Peyote while waiting for the fame to be
done. Got most of the bends and tweaks out last week, now I need to
weld up the cracks and have a few minor mods to the roll cage done. I
want a little more room in the driver's compartment.
Anyway, I decided to redo the diff and put in the 3.90 gearset I
have. When I took the cover off I found all the ring gear bolts were
finger tight--most were turned out several turns, and one was
completely out and bouncing around in the diff case--for some time it
seems.
I found one of the wheel bearings has some rough spots in it,
probably brinneling. I'll replace both. The big surprise was that
once I put the new gearset in, it was perfect as far as shimming is
concerned. I'm kind of surprised by that. The gear engagement
patterns were perfectly centered, deep in the tooth, with a little
bit of drag. I'm wondering if these gears are a bit more precisely
made than I expected. Took me hours to get that kind of engagement
with the previous set.
Does anyone know what the tunnels are for in the diff case? They look
like they would be perfect for using the ring gear as a pump wheel
for pumping diff oil through a cooler. I assume they are to lube the
front pinion bearing, but they look a little too purposeful for that.
I wonder how many more runs I could have had with that diff before it
blew to bits.
