I spent quite some time blueprinting the TR3B/6 gearboxes for racing. The
late laygear with "c" clips to help retain the (rear) laygear brg. is a good
thing, and TRF supplies a slightly longer torrington lay brg, which is also
good. I would check the hardness of any new layshaft.
With Redline oil, I really flogged this gearbox with fine reliability. Do
check and safety wire the top cover wedgelocks. I used the modified CR
gearsets from the Dolomite Sprint (can not quite picture TR7 gears in the big
TR
box)
I did run many seasons with the 7 speed overdrive setup before scca allowed
alt. gear ratios for the TR3.
The Stag gearbox has a 2 diameter layshaft, so there is a larger ID for the
2 rear lay bearings; it also has nifty needle layshaft thrust bearings. Do not
believe the stag manual about drifting the layshaft out the front of the
case! The standard input shaft is too long for TR use.
