Generally the layshaft bearing goes south because
it's small and not all that well supported. I've heard that there are
some fixes for this, including dual bearings on the rear end of the
layshaft. Anyone ever hear of this?
The Stag has an improved laygear bearing setup but there really isn't that
big a problem with the stock arrangement IF you use good parts & service it
regularly.
Some of the laygear replacement bearings are caged & don't have many needles
in them. Torrington has a nice bearing but sometimes you have to deepen the
housing bore a tad to fit them.
The laygear thrusts wear from the little pieces of trash getting behind the
gear & the thrust washer & backside of the washer & eating up the gear thrust
washer & case but frequent lube changes minimizes this.
The biggest problem is getting good parts for them. Most of the good OEM
stuff is gone & repros are always in question.Syncros are a big problem, lot
of
bogus pos replacements on the market.
Kens BFE CR gearset is great & if the box is built right & maintained it
will live a good life.
