Steve Smith sent me wiring instructions for the one I just installed, which
worked great over the past weekend. The large terminal with the threaded nut
takes a (fat - I ran 8 gauge) wire straight to the battery. This alternator
also has a receptacle for ana electricical plug from the Chevy Sprint wiring
harness - there are three spade connections within the receptacle. One of
those needs to be connected to the ignition circuit, so that when the
ignition is on, the alternator's built-in regulator is recieving a signal to
tell it to charge. When looking at the connections, the three blades form a
"U", with two blades parallel and one perpendicular across the bottom of the
"U". Connect the power source to the blade on the right side of the U and
it should work fine. The bottom one is not used, and the left one can be
hooked up to a trouble light - if the light is on your alternator is not
charging. At one point I had a link to another site that explained why this
works, but can't find it now. I did not use it, in any case. If your
friend is running autocross or hillclimbs, for less load on the engine just
pull the wire off the blade connection - the alternator is no longer being
told to charge - no 45 amp drain on the engine power and your car runs off
the battery for a little while- plenty to power the ignition for an hour or
so.
