Wine country classic is a great event, classy but not exclusive--they
take Peyote whenever I manage to get my entry in, and they have a few
production cars in the grid. The trick is to get your entry in early.
It also helps if you enter some other HMSA events. While General
Racing still runs Wine Country and Monterey, Steve and Debbie Earle
have backed off from the grind and are having Cris Vandagriff
(President of HMSA and a long-time right hand to Steve) run things.

I won't be there this year because Peyote is in Virginia, but it's
one of my favorite events. In many ways I like it more than the
Monterey Historics, though Monterey overall is a incredible event.

Make sure you go to the saturday night party in Sonoma Square, and if
you can tag along to the friday night driver's party up at the Office
complex (the building up on top of the hill) then do so--good food,
good wine, lots of benchracing. The Sonoma Square party includes an
impromptu concours that includes a lot of the race cars that have
some kind of street legality (pretty sketchy usually) and a lot of
food and wine tasting. It costs a few bucks, but it's well worth the
price.

Laguna Seca and Sears are must go tracks for anyone remotely in the
area. Wine Country is not quite as hard to get into as Monterey--but
it's close. Other choices for these tracks are the SCCA event in May
at Laguna Seca and the CSRG Charity Challenge at Sears. Both offer a
lot more track time.

There's no way to interpret race tune from compression ratio--the cam
overlap has too much influence on the numbers. Often a street engine
with a mild cam and 8 to 1 compression will have higher compression
readings than a hot cam and 11 to 1. You use compression tests to
tell if you have a flaw--a stuck ring or a leaky valve. Leakdown
tests are better for this, but compression is a quick and dirty check.
