I'm not a metallurgist, and I don't even play one on TV, but I don't
think there's an upper limit for how hard you'd like these things to
be other than the potential for them shattering. My ceramic lifters
are harder than you can probably make steel, and they have marvelous
wear characteristics--both for the lifters and the cam.
Now if I could just remember who I got them from. They are absurdly
expensive, but I'd have to say worth it so far. No detectable wear on
either the lifters or the cam after two hard seasons. I've never seen
that before. There's always some wear or some surface cracking.
