I generally leave out everything except the axle gears, essentially making
it a spool. I put a good bevel on the gears to allow a good surface for the
weld beads & wedge them tight in the housing so they stay concentric with
the
axle centerline during welding. Pre heat & proper cooling will generally
keep
things from getting distorted &/or cracked. The TR housing is pretty stout
but the spit housing still sometimes warps.
