Joe,
In my limited experience (twice now) doing the routine replacement of
synchros and bushings has eliminated the gear-jumping. I also replace the
synchro detent springs and balls every time since it's only a couple bucks.
Fatigued springs do not hold the detent as well.

this? I'd like to get this back together before Blackhawk Farms for Father's
Day
Weekend. I have most of the pieces for engine rebuild.
