On behalf of the CVAR Triumph folks (we call ourselves TX FoT) and the
worldwide triumph racing community, FoT, I want to thank CVAR and our
membership as well as the Stephens family for the fabulous hospitality
shown to our Triumph buddies from around the country at the Hallett
event. The Friends of Triumph had a great weekend, with 28 racecars
showing up. They all left happy and elated with the experience, and
most worn out from all the track time. I hope our membership enjoyed
our participation as well.
In case the word did not spread around, the TR250K, was designed and
built for the 1967 Sebring race as a side project by Triumph's USA
Competition manager Kas Kastner. The body was designed by Pete Brock,
known for the Cobra Daytona coupe. The car raced at Sebring in the
Prototype class and the way I heard it, the car was actually leading
the race some hours in when the team determined that a wheel cracking
problem with the Halibrands made it unsafe to continue. There was no
ALMS program back then so it disappeared until it became a vintage
racer. We thank owner Billy Hart for bringing it all the way from
Portland WA, and Kas Kastner for joining us for the weekend. Kas went
on after his Triumph days to run the Nissan GTP program with great
success.
We had cars from the far corners of the USA, with a nice contingent
from the west coast. Some guys even brought their MG friends with them.
The publisher of Grassroots Motorsports and Classic Motorsports, Tim
Suddard had a great time with his TR3. Look for some coverage in one of
those fine magazines.
Lastly, we had some struggles. I saw no less than 4 cylinder heads come
off to replace head gaskets. All of them made it back together and ran
again, although one guy chose to save his car for the rest of his race
track tour. The incredibly fast Herald burned up a camshaft. A Spitfire
guy had a spare and it was repaired and ran well on Sunday. A couple of
TR4A's had u-joint and axle problems, but again, they raced on Sunday.
Larry Young even cracked a liner (yes TR3/4's run liners). His car
raced on Sunday after a semi-all nighter Saturday night while the track
was being whipped into shape. In the end a handful of cars didn't make
the grid for the All Triumph feature, but most did. One of the "Head
Cases" was Mike Munson's TR6. It couldn't complete a session Friday and
Saturday until they swapped out the head gasket. He placed second on
Sunday with the video rolling. Watch "Tiger" Munson's 1970 TR6 Racer in
car video from the Triumph feature race at Hallett. It is featured on
Mark "Puffy" Pruitt's website. Have a look.
