removed one for me with absolute elegance when I broke one at the Monterey
Historics several years ago. He used a drop-in pilot and a jobber's length
drill to drill completely through the stud, then pulled it out with
square-style easy-out that I recall was welded to a piece of drill rod.
You could certainly make up the same rig. You'd need a piece of mild steel
rod about three inches long the same diameter (less sliding clearance) of
the bolt hole. Chuck it in a lathe and drill a hole through it about 3/4ths
of the bolt diameter. Obtain a jobbers drill the same size as the hole in
the pilot. Drop the pilot in, drill through the bolt with lots of lube.
Drilling the hole will probably loosen the bolt somewhat. Insert the easy
out and back the bugger out. I still have the broken piece in my toolbox as
a souvenier of an important race weekend saved by a couple of wonderful
people. Alternately you could travel to Santa Cruz and have them do it.
Shame on your machinist for not figuring out how to do it.
