Cary,
VARAC up here in Canada has established a race group called Group 70+ which
allows later cars such as TR8 or late TR6 to compete, and couls presumably
allow earlier cars prepared "out of period".
The class is dominated by Corvettes and Porsche 911s, but there is good racing
midpack between the Datsuns, Porsche 914 and Triumphs, and a few Mustangs.
This seems to fit between the SCCA rules and "real" vintage, so might be a
solution. To work well I think some displacement classes would have to be
introduced, and some limits on how specialized cars which enter are allowed to
be: a TR8 is not likely to keep up with a BMW M1, for example!
