I used to believe so but we now use a late TR6 overdrive box and it is
great. The "A" type has bigger clutches to hold the power but also weighs a
lot more and has more internal parasitic drag. The "J" type is smaller but
when well built will hold just as well and has less weight and parasitic
drag. Overdrive fourth is essentially the same between the two. To see how
much power these can take look up www.gearvendors.com and see what they do
with the "J" type. They claim that it will hold with 1,500 horsepower going
thru it or 30,000 pound motor homes. As a side note, if you need parts or
complete overdrives. look for 242 Volvos with a four speed. They have "J"
type overdrives on almost every one. Some minor modifications are needed
like mounting holes drilled and tapped to fit a TR6 rear trans mount, but
they are available at reasonable cost. Barry
