Any chance you've got an early, longer front cover on the transmission ?  Since
you mentioned the convex face of the throwout bearing, I assume you've got the
TR4A-onwards diaphragm clutch, which requires a shorter front cover than the
earlier TR2-4 "finger" clutch.
