Hi all!
Brad and I agree about the diesel -- we have a 1953 Chevy one-ton panel (hi
Bill!) that we are going to restore and pull a 31' Airstream trailer with
two cars in it with. We had planned to put a Chevy big block in it, so we
found a great deal on a 1981 Chevy dually with a 454. We have been hauling
stuff around with the dually and not getting very good gas mileage (about 6
to 8 mpg -- ow!) so we have changed our plans and will put a Chevy 6.5
diesel in it instead. Everyone we have talked to says the diesel is the
way to go -- you get 20 mpg no matter what and they are easily good for
350,000 miles.
Just my 65 cents (inflation, ya know!)...
Keep Triumphing,
Susan :)

Could not agree more. I too haul a twenty foot Pace America closed
trailer.
In and around the mid-west I tow with my 1950 Chevrolet One Ton Panel truck
(the engine upgrade is a 1966 292 straight six out of a school bus). But
on
the long hauls, I use our company's yard goat, which is a 1996 Ford F250
pick up
with the big power stroke diesel. Incredible power. Never even breathes
hard, even on those ball buster hills up to the Glen. And I suggest that
these
engines are in fact economical selections, if you use life cycle costing.
You
might have to freshen the tranny half way through, but that engine is good
for
300,000-350,000 miles easy.
