As I recall, he wore some sort of glove with a metal rod sticking out
the palm. This rod inserted into a hole in a piece attached to the
steering wheel. When inserted into that hole, it worked like a necker
knob and could be quickly withdrawn in case he needed to evacuate in a
hurry.
