What kind of carbs? Sounds like a stuck richening device, but I don't know
enough about SU's or strombergs to say. Another possibility is a very
restricted exhaust, though I can't fathom how that would happen. It's not
likely oil or you'd be seeing blue smoke--do you get sooty smoke?

I hope someone on the list can offer an explanation and solution to a
problem I've never seen before. My TR4A is running rich withg sooty black
plugs on cylinders 2 and 3, but perfect coffee with triple cream colour on
1 and 4. This can't be carb adjustment since either the front or back
pair should be affected. I also don't think it's oil since the valves and
guides are nearly new, about 3,000 miles and the exhaust does not seem
smokey. I had the head off over the winter, the problem was obvious from
the colour of the valves, and I noticed a couple of stripped studs on the
exhaust header, which I replaced and tightened up properly, but there's no
improvement. Any insights or suggestions welcomed. Thanks. Simon, WOFTAM
Racing.
