Siegfried Bettman born 1863 Nuremberg, Germany came to London 1884. Exported
bikes from London and in 1887 moved to Coventry, the centre of the world
bicycle industry. 1897: registered as the New Triumph Cycle Company.
Minerva engines installed 1902. In 1911 - 12 Bettman became chairman of the
Standard Motor Company of Coventry[later Standard bought Triumph]. Mayor of
Coventry 1913 & 1914, the 1st of 559 mayors to be born abroad. In 1944
Standard Motor Company buys Triumph[the motorcycle business was sold to Jack
Sangster in 1936]. William Maudslay, Standard Motor Company, began producing
cars in Coventry in 1903. In 1952 the TR2 appeared at the 1952 Motor show.
Ken Richardson, ex-BRM man, helped engineer and develop the TR2 produced from
1953. The joint event at the Roadster
Factory in Armagh & Indiana, PA should be very interesting & exciting. Many
notables including racer/developer Ken Richardson have attended. In the past
300+Triumphs, 1,000+English cars, and 87 TR8s have attended respectively. Drag
races, mountain tours, Rally runs, autocross, gymkhanas, valve cover/remote
control races, drive-in-movies/picnic, formal dinner under tent/famous
bands/fire works events have been some of the events. As well as meeting at
the Coventry Inn, authentic reproduction PUB across from the country
Courthouse in Indiana, described by Graham Robson as exact but does not smell
bad, is not all smoked up or dirty as the ones in England. Sincerely
Yours, C. Bruce Strock, CBS distributing/importing, Springtown, PA 18081-0490
