We're running the stock camshaft in our supercharged $2002 GT6+. Right now
we've got a set of rusty 6->2 exhaust headers on the car. The budget rules
won't allow us to purchase new headers without giving up something else
(like tires). And yes, we are selling off some less necessary parts in
order to make some improvements while staying under the $2003 limit.
Since labor doesn't come out of the budget I can fabricate a set of 6->3
headers out of straws, duct tape, and knuckle skin. My understanding is
with a camshaft that has a duration greater than 240 degrees you can end up
with two nearby exhaust valves open simultaneously. Using 6->3 headers
ensures that each branch never has more than one exhaust valve open at the
same time. Given the short duration of the stock camshaft will it be worth
the effort?
The competition manual states that a single tailpipe works better than a
double tailpipe. Would we be better off using a cast iron manifold (single
pipe) from a parts car or should we stick with the twin pipe headers? Will
adding a crossover "H" pipe make up the difference? How about a 2->1
collector between the headers and a single pipe?
Thanks,
-Erik
