I believe this means the regulator inside the alternator is toast.  If the
problem was the ignition switch (or a wiring short), the engine would have
kept running when you switched off (and unplugging the alternator would not
prevent the battery from running down).

I've seen replacement regulators for sale on eBay, but don't know of a
vendor that sells them.

BTW there is a Bosch alternator that is fairly readily available, fits
perfectly in place of the TR6 Lucas alternator (even uses the same
connectors), and puts out more current (60 amps instead of 43 I think).  It
fits several cars, the one I recall is a 1978 Ford Fiesta with air
conditioning (non AC cars use an entirely different Motorcraft alternator).
I bought a rebuilt unit at the local parts house, ISTR it was $55 plus a $10
core.
