I offer this up to the collective and hopefully retained knowledge of the
group: ALWAYS replace or clean out your oil cooler during an engine rebuild
(especially if after a metal particle disbursing event). In my ignorance and
haste, I didn't do that during my rebuild. I couldn't get oil pressure upon
starting up anew, and spent a day in the paddock chasing down the problem. A
likely major contributor was gunk I blew backwards out of the cooler input
(in line after a double filter set-up)... and that was probably a partial
cure as ultrasonic cleaning is really the only way to get all the stuff out
of a cooler. A whole new cooler is probably the best option. Now I'm worried
some of that stuff went right back into the engine. (However, it sure ran
well briefly once I started it on Catrol 30 wt.!)

I am completely rebuilding an engine that I was running on Redline synthetic
oil. I believe a previous thread had a consensus on running in with
non-synthetic, then switching over. Other than the cost factor of a few oil
changes (not insignificant), any reasons not to start up on synthetic? Any
bad experiences I hope not to repeat?
