240Z drums

I tried to install a set of Datsun 240Z drums on the rear of my TR3 today and
had a bit of a problem.  I had the center hole enlarged but it seems as though
the outer casting (the part that extends beyond the fins) comes in contact
with the backing plate and thus will not allow the drum to mount on the car.
Does anyone know if just machining the ridge of the drum off up to the fins
will work or is there other machine work that must be done to allow the use of
these drums on a TR3/TR4?
