Joe Asked if Bon Ami was used to seat rings in the 1st Chevy V8's- From my 
reccolection we used it in all the engines in which we used chrome rings. The 
other back alley trick I remember was putting the block(after boring and 
honing) outside to let it rust for a while. everything but the bores was well 
covered w/lubricant.
The coat of rust worked like the Bon Ami to seat the rings quickly.
Next we'll be talking about blowing walnut shells into the plug holes to clean 
out the carbon!
