Greetings Faithful Triumphiles,

The 2001 SCCA Solo II National Tour made a stop in Ayer, MA (pronounced
ayah and not to be confused with ayup from the Maine dialect) the weekend
past - June 15 through 17. In addition, remnants of Tropical storm Allison
also stopped by for most of the day on Sunday making for an interesting
event.

But here's the big news - there were five Triumphs entered and four
trophied! In E Prepared, Matt Wilder wound up in third in his "Team Wild"
TR4. In D Mod, Robert Totten captured a second place in his '64 LeMans
Spitfire replica, and Steve Hayward from NY placed first in E Mod (in a
TR7 powered by a Turbo Mazda rotary). This writer placed first in F
Prepared in a '73 TR6 (sponsored by the good folks at GT Classics). Also
competing and much faster than last year was Dean Van de Carr in his FP
TR6 ('73 too!).

The highlights of the weekend were searing heat on Friday and Sat.
followed by torrential rain on Sunday. Sat morning track temps were in
excess of 120 F, the ambient was in the 90's and the dewpoint was in the
mid-70's. Majorly sticky in terms of comfort level.

In terms of medical risk, Sat. was heat prostration and dehydration. No
ambulances were needed, but many cases of Berkshire Mountain Spring
bottled water were consumed. Sunday, the biggest threat was exposure.
Several folks were seen shivering due to being soaked to the bone. Nobody
was carted away on Sunday either.

Sunday was a true test of greee-it. The day started off nicely with a high
overcast, but as the second run group started (of five groups total), it
became clear that if you were not equipped with a "sowester", you were
going to get damp. In excess of two inches of rain fell during competition
making for some very wet runs. If you had "rains", you were going to move
up in the trophies...

All in all, this writer had a blast even if all my Sunday runs were in the
wet - basically wet, wetter, and unbelievably wet - the water was sloshing
in the floorboards of my car during the last run, and at one point I hit
puddle deep enough to allow spray _over the bonnet_. Yee ha! Note to self:
slicks will hydroplane at 25 MPH given about 1/8 inch (3mm) of standing
water.

;-)

Anyway, Triumphs Triumphed at Ayer.

Over and out.
