Sometimes you're the bug. I hate it when I'm such an idiot.
I'm rushing to get a working gearbox in Killer for the upcoming autocross and
our big British Field Day. And since there is another IVR race coming up in a
few weeks as well, I think this close ratio GT6 box is the way to go. It came
with the pile of extra stuff I had to drag home when I bought the currently
dead red race car, might as well give it a try. The internals look good, the
input shaft has been machined to fit a Spit clutch, so why not? Well, when I
say the input shaft has been worked to fit a Spit, all I measured was the
diameter which mates with the pilot bearing and the distance from the
bellhousing face. Oh, and I did count to see if it was a ten spline shaft
like the early Spit gearbox.
So last night I get the broken gearbox out, and tonight is the night to replace
the broken FK box with a close ratio KF unit. I wrestle it into place and then
proceed to waste an amazing amount of time trying to get a 10 spline input
shaft of 1 inch diamter into a clutch disk made for a 10 spline 7/8 inch shaft.
Why did I not check that critical dimension BEFORE all the cursing, cajoling,
begging and bashing, waggling and whining?
Oh well, if I can't round up a proper clutch disk tomorrow I can drop in a
single rail 1500 box and driveshaft, do the close ratio box later. Drat.
