Triumph List
Subject: Boring Wet Sleeves...boring could be an exciting subject...or bad
joke
Initially, I sent a couple messages out, privately, as I am wont to do that
with all of the activity on the list, and then decided that this sounded like
a very informamative thread. One that bears discussion among the agrarian wet
sleeve liner 'set'.
The gist of my responses to two gentlemen, as there was some concern over
boring existing sleeves:
In 1991, I sent my 86MM liners to a Performance Machine Shop to be bored to
87MM. They used the block as a fixture and charged me $18 per hole (Midwest
Pricing) They matched my 'off the shelf' Jahns pistons to the liners. I've
run this engine, in anger, for 8 years with one ring change. (We have
surpassed the 1963 Lap Record at Road America, set by Jim Spencer...I love to
say that, as the car is essentially set up to 1963 specifications)
I KNOW, Tullius was faster in 1964.... :-)
I just bored another set of liners because I found a set of NOS Hepolites at
87MM .030 OS and expect to install this engine someday...current one runs too
good and so very reliabile.
Preemptive Strike: Overheating? Let me interject...I run a stock Late
TR3A/earlyTR4 radiator in my race car...I DO have an oil cooler. I have never
boiled...WATER..as we are not allowed to run coolant.
Perhaps some of the more technically oriented racers or street guys have a
few comments along with some advice to the newbie TR racers or guys who are
rebuilding street engines?
I personally think using the old iron (not aftermarket stuff) and machining
to exacting standards with today's machining equipment makes sense to me. (I
also have somewhat of a manufacturing background)
Have at it. Please come out of corner and fight cleanly...learn something and
have fun...I am.
