Having been through a clutch explosion or two, my feeling would be that you
want it as close to the tranny as possible.

If you only cover the tunnel area, you are still left with a large exposure
area in the floor, which is nothing more than thin sheetmetal which will slow
the bits down, but not enough to keep you from loosing a toe or two. I have
vivid memories of my next-door neighbor's steel toed boot being flayed down to
the steel by a piece which came up through the floor and bounced back down off
the pedal box in a clutch explosion.

If the blanket is going to hold too much heat in, the trans can be cooled using
other methods...

I had a blanket up hard against the trans in the spit, and never had a problem
with it overheating.
