When I co-chaired SCTOA's turns at Triumphest in 1985, 1990 and 1995 (Pismo
Beach,Ventura and Palm Springs) we always had "quick" driving events (no car
gets judged for show without doing ONE or more of the moving events)...
albeit short ones in addition to some great road tours. Same routes used for
the prestigious Wine Country Road Rallies for example and the Monterey scenic
drives and the Palm Desret rallye ....well you get the idea. And most years
there is a blind driving event (which forces you to trust your co-driver
completely!!.... although some never make it....lol). And each year when San
Jose/Sunnyvale Triumph Travelers hosted they have almost always had a high
speed slalom (high speed enough to pop many hood latches one year).
The change from year to year (and lack of a true 'speed event' is due to the
fact that the hosting clubs does what they do best .... local sites usually
have homesteading lawyers on them in California ... and insurance for a club
that hasn't been or isn't a VTR chapter can be prohibitive.....among the
logistics of proximity to a speed capable site (Yeah.... I know...any parking
lot will do...but the lawyers love that).
The Triumphest road rallyes in the backroads of Ventura county were
outstanding when Central Coast Triumphs hosted and a lot more challenging
than many club SOLO events I had attended. Almost 28 miles or twisting hill
climbing, gully lunging, dirt tracking scenic beauty. The beauty part Joanne
told me about later as my eyes were glued to the speedo, odo and sholderless
hill sides. (And I ran in SCCA SOLO II for 8 years to compare it to).
Can't tell you why they didn't have a slalom this year .... I know I'd have
personally rented a track for Kas to annoint each entry with a lap of track
time.....could have been a great charity fund raiser..... but maybe some
constructive input to the next hosting club would be worthwhile...along with
a non refundable registration.
Unless you've actually chaired a 500-600 person 250 Triumph event for three
days of Triumph craziness, usually complete with Roadster Factory Guiness
parties, (Cheers!!!) I'd find it hard to fault a club and it's oranizers
without their having a forum to respond.
Triumphest has been going strong since 1984 in Palm Desert ....it has always
been well attended and highly profitable to it's hosts and vendor supporters
(well some years more than others ...right Charles?...smile).
If I get any insight I'd be glad to post it here tho. It does seem a shame
with such notaries in attendance that no real 'competition' event.....
hey...maybe Robson paid .... nah....I'll leave that thread for JonMac to
finish.
