I can answer one of your questions regarding 'dropping' the TR4-6 Tranny into 
TR3. There is a dimensional difference.

The later all synchro gear boxes were about 5/8" longer, than the TR3, due to 
the addition of the fourth synchro position.

I allowed for this by redrilling the rear mounting plate. There is enough 
movement in the splined driveshaft to take it up.

Some folks have forced the engine/transmission into position, but it puts an 
awful lot of stress on the three mounts.  :-)
