I just tore apart my GT6 tranny today in preparation for rebuilding it
for the 1296 Spitfire engine. I have a few questions I'd like to pose
to all those Experts out there.
1. Knowing that I will need to modify the input shaft for the Spit
Clutch and bell housing, I noticed that it is larger in diameter than
the Spit input shaft. Do I machine the thing down to the same diameter
of the Spitfire shaft and use the stock bell housing collar, or do I
somehow transplant the GT6 collar into the SPitfire bell housing?
2. I noticed that the tip of the main shaft (where the needle bearings
ride) is worn and has a copper color to it. Is it possible to build
this up and turn it down to the proper size or should I bite the bullet
and go for a new shaft.
3. Although the layshaft doesn't show any appreciable wear, I can shake
it and feel a small amount of play between it and the needle bearings.
It is the same even if I slide the shaft down a bit to a different spot
on the shaft. Will bearings take up this slop or is it normal?
That's all for now, but I'm sure I'll have more! :)
