Years ago I lightened some standard rods for my own race engine.  As I
remember the standard rods with bolts weighed around 2 lbs., ie 896 grams.
By working mostly on the big end, I was able to get them down to around 700
grams.  I used short, tapered inside pins and lightened the powermax
pistons.  I will check the actual weights and forward that on later today.
After about 80,000 miles of road use and 30 race weekends, vintage, using a
rev limit of 6800 rpm, a rod broke at the cylinder wall oiling hole at
around 6,000 rpm.  It put a big hole in the right side of the block just in
line with the headers.  The corner workers said that the whole underside of
the car was one sheet of flame caused by the oil lighting on fire as it hit
the hot headers.   The big end of the rod was still intact and the piston
with the end of the rod above the oil hole went up to the top of the bore
and stayed there, the center part of the rod left the engine and was never
found.  I shut the engine down as quickly as I could, in the Morgan, I could
see debris come through the hood louvers when the rod let go.  I was very
lucky as the only damage was to one rod, one piston, one liner and the
block.  Everything else was ok, even the cam and crank!   But, ever since I
have used and recomended billet rods for any engines turned more than 6,000
RPM.   The oil fire went out as soon as the engine stopped pumping oil onto
the headers.
