Greg:
What a fantastic event you folks had! I know each time BABY DOLL has come to
ROAD AMERICA, I have watched her fly around the course with my mouth open.
BABY DOLL is no Virgin. Most impressive.
It has been my experience that for the most part, the media in general, and
the announcers in particular, are not knowledgeable enough to cover vintage
racing as it should be covered. Speedvision (and all others) would do well
to hire Henry Adamson (VSCDA Charter Member, and Current President) as their
'Color Commentator.' Henry acts as the PA Announcer at most VSCDA events,
and he is head and shoulders above anyone doing it professionally these days.
He recognizes hot action up and down the field (not just who's leading), and
in our normal 'mixed bag' grids, he knows when someone is performing above
the norm. But his real long suit is the fact that he is a walking
encyclopedia of Motor Sports. No offense meant, but I'd bet Henry could
answer any questions Peter Morgan has about Morgans.
I ran the WEST MICHIGAN GRAND PRIX (WMGP) this past week end in the Thunder
Bolt. I finished 4th in Class and 22nd overall in a field of 38 cars
dominated by Camaroes, Corvettes, and Mustangs. I should have finished 3rd
in Class, as I was catching a fast ALFA DUETTO S, who was grided ahead of me,
but I let him get away, when I slowed and moved off the line to let a bunch
of front runners lap me. Anyway, the WEST MICHIGAN GRAND PRIX used a
professional announcer, all week end, but for our sessions, Henry Adamson
acted as Color Commentator. Promoters tend to hire a local Disk Jockey to do
their announcing. It has been my experience, that unless they are Gear
Heads, they bomb. It makes a big difference to have someone who knows what
they are talking about on the mike.
The WMGP had five or six series running, including TransAm, Barber-Dodge, two
World Challenge groups, Spec Fords, and Vintage/Historic. CLEARLY
Vintage/Historic was one of the most popular groups with the crowd.
