Unfortunately this is common. Take some time and hand lap the two pieces and 
this will remove some of the "fret" marks. The ones that are very deep will 
of course not be touched and you will have to make a judgment call about 
whether or not to replace either piece. Once the surfaces are mated, not only 
will they fit better (less movement=less fretting), but the now more fully 
engaged surfaces will help power transfer thru the joint decreasing the load 
on the key.
Stronger keys (full length tool steel) will also help the "cause" as long as 
you have it apart.

Seen way too much of diffs lately...
