5psi is too high for Strombergs; it may push the needle off the seat.
Use a good quality regulator to make sure that you're not having this problem.

I'll let others comment about the fuelpump issue. I'm running the 
silver top, and I put a combination filter/regulator on that I swiped
from an ALFA (mounted where the original fuel pump was)
