Jack,
Is this baffle located just outboard of the diff carrier bearings? Would you
care to elaborate??
Regards all,
Chip

Subject: FOT Bulletin-Rear Inner Axle Seals
FOT,
I promised to verify this seal when I got this information:
Unipart #GHS 185 x 1
VB order number 5-881
One way or another I had a seal(s) other than this one in our race car
and it didnt work. This one appears to be an original equipment type &
looks like a leather seal with generous contact area. I will be placing
this seal on the street TR3, as well.
Summary:
Chip Bond says he has problems with the seal as described above and
suspects that he is getting some deflection of the axle shaft in this
area. Severe application.....
Jack Wheeler & Mordy Dunst run cars with IRS, I believe....non-problem.
Jack Drews, I think, has a baffle welded in on the inboard side of the
axle and I think another FOT was contemplating doing this as well. I
dont think he has had any problems.
TR4 #197 held up well for one season using the above seal and I will
continue to monitor.
This is not a big deal, but since it is possible to go to your local
bearing service counter and substitute a seal not suitable for the job,
it is worth noting. I hate oil soaked brake shoes and I hate working at
the track.
