Bob,
It doesn't unscrew - it just slides in the side of the case and is sealed b=
y an o ring. The pinion is secured in the sleeve by a small spilt pin.

Remove the speedometer drive gear by releasing the set bolt and retainer pl=
ate from the side of the tail shaft housing. Pull the speedometer drive sl=
eeve out of the casing. Inspect the plastic gear for wear and replace it i=
f the teeth are damaged. Do this by driving the teeny split pin out of the=
side of the sleeve. If you replace the gear, you can also renew the seal =
that is inside the sleeve. Replace the outer sleeve o-ring. Oil the o-rin=
g to ease assembly into the tail shaft housing, reinsert the sleeve, and se=
cure the retaining plate in the sleeve=92s notch with the set bolt and lock=
washer.

Any ideas on why a 5-speed speedometer pinion carrier would refuse to
budge from the side of the transmission (so pinion and carrier can be
replaced with correct # teeth and alternate carrier)?
The locking tab was removed, but the pinion carrier will not rotate CCW.
Pinion carrier hasn't been removed in 50 years, but trying to think of a
reason it would not unscrew.
