wow, if Chicago is now known as "the People's Republic" I'm afraid to ask what
they are calling us SF bay area types... 2.85 for regular out here @ the Costco

Graeme,
Owing in large part to significant additional oil production in the continental
US, our gasoline prices are dropping. Gas in NW Indiana is about $2.60 per
gallon for 87 octane, a.k.a. "unleaded regular". Just across the state line in
the People's Republic of Chicago, gasoline is more expensive. (Chicago's gas
tax, and every other tax, as well, is much higher.)
On the last long trip I took in my '66 1600/U20 4-speed, I got about about 28
mpg at about 70 mph. With my '67-1/2 2000 Solex, the number was 25-27 mpg at
75-80 mph. All on premium fuel (92-93 octane).
Gary

I always chuckle when I hear that statement!
The price of gas: -
in Oz it is between $1.40 & $1.60/L depending on what RON number you buy.
Multiply that by 3.7 for $/US Gallon and see how you go!
