Chuck,
If it were my car I would start by draining the fuel tank and adding a
gallon or two of fresh fuel. You don't want to try to use the old fuel.
Clean out the car float bowls and blow out the fuel lines while you are at
it.
Change the oil trans fluid and rear end fluid. It would be best for the
engine if you would prelube the engine by removing the distributor and
turning the oil pump shaft with a large screwdriver bit until you see the
rocker arms being lubricated. You need to turn the shaft counter clockwise.
If you have your heart set on replacing the alternator, go ahead, but I
suspect the problem was a bad battery. Take the alternator to a shop and
have it tested.
Get the engine running and then move on to being sure the brakes are working
properly.
Last would be the tires.
Good luck
Peace,
Pat

Subject: [Roadsters] Trying to Resuscitate Trixie
Just over two years ago heading home from downtown, Trixie started having
some problems. Trixie is a 1968 (ish) Datsun 1600. As I would push on the
accelerator the lights would get brighter, as I left it off, they would dim
and the car would stall. I assumed that it was an alternator issue, but
parked the car and lifebs interferences began.
Now two years later, I have an uninstalled new alternator and belts sitting
in the garage. Four tires that need replaced. I am sure a battery that is
not only dead (lack of charge) but dead.
If it were you and you had a day to try and bring life back into Trixie,
what steps would you take?? I am sure charge the battery and try to crank
it would not be the best solution, but my default. Thus my question to the
group.
