Russell,
With the cars which have come to my garage running poorly, I have always
gone through a complete tune-up, starting with valve adjustments, then
dismantling the distributor (on the bench) to check and lubricate the
mechanical advance. New points, plugs and condenser, possibly plug wires.
Set the timing with a good DC powered light. Then I set the carbs. Balance
the air flow first, then set the mixture. Some cannot be adjusted properly
as a result of throttle shaft wear, or contact/wear between the needles and
nozzles. It's not a huge investment in either money or time, but it pays
dividends when you don't have to ask yourself whether its the ignition,
carburetion, or whatever. FWIW.
No, I am not a professional mechanic -- self-taught many years ago when I
bought my first roadster.
