Before you go any further, have you installed a fusible link in line with the
ammeter? If you have a short somewhere, it's better to blow a fuse than, let
your ammeter melt. Don't ask me how I know. Dan'66 1600

When I turned the key a second time, I heard a small pop and saw a bit of
smoke off the negative terminal. The starter did
not go at all. Turned the key a third time, same thing.
