Battery tender is not a charger. It only is keeps it from discharging. So 
your battery needs to be charged first and when it will stay that way 
forever. If your battery is good and terminals are clean. I have been using 
them for two years now and they work great.

I too bought a well reviewed battery tender off Amazon for my Datsun.
Not too impressed with it, on first use it stayed red for more than 72
hours,
which is the max it should have taken.   I gave it another 48 hours, and
it finally went green.  The unit (block that plugs into the AC power)
always feels a bit too warm even for when it is not actively charging.

My battery has always been quick to self-discharge (or the clock
is drawing too much current, which I don't think it is), and the
electrolytes
might not be completely in balance, which might be throwing the
battery tender into a confused state.
