Thanks to all of you that replied with descriptions and helpful hints.
Knowing it was a U-clip helped. Had I started with the front brake
lines first I might have been able to figure it out for myself being
able to see it from above. I was able to pull it apart with adjustable
pliers after disconnecting the hard line using flare wrenches and
liberal amounts of PB Blaster.
I learned a few things from this exercise:
1. Bifocals were not designed for work beneath a roadster,
2. The human head doesn't fit between the differential and the gas tank,
3. Roadster owners are helpful, great bunch!
