Ned,
There better not be any gas fumes around the tank straps. I recommend you
find some 1'16-inches think hi-durometer (low compressibility) neoprene,
which I know is non-hygroscopic. A thicker version of that material is what
I replaced the jute pads with which go between the body and frame when we
refinsihed my '66.
I wish I could remember where I bought it, but, as I recall, it wasn't hard
to find. If you have trouble, I think I know where to find it. Let me know
if you want me to look. Cheap, too.
