Sadly, 3M 77 General Adhesive is NOT what you want to use. The heat from
summer and the car is more than the adhesive can survive. A friend of mine
did a headliner with it... you guessed it, it sags in the middle.
While it CAN be used with success, the main problem is that it MUST be
applied twice. Once on each surface and allowed to ALMOST dry, then again
to re-coat and then applied while the material is tacky. The problem is
that if you're not very careful you'll have streaks where it's thicker /
thinner and that is where it begins to separate.
3M does make a very good adhesive for Vinyl/Metal, it's number 80. I've
used this on my car and other projects and had exceptional results.
I've also had good luck using plain old Contact Cement out of a can and
brushing it on. I used this on the rugs/backing and the dash/foam recover
and had good results.
