Dave,

The overflow reservoir should be no more than half-full. "Overflow" is a
misnomer -- it's an expansion tank which allows the coolant in the cooling
system to expand as it heats up, and contract as it cools down, without
losing any.

Since Nissan did not provide a high-point vent in roadster cooling systems,
you need to do it the tedious way.

You should have a solid cap on the top of the thermostat housing , on the
cylinder head of your 1600, and the one with the push button on the top of
the expansion tank. After refilling an empty system, I repeatedly squeeze
the return hose between the head and the radiator, to work the air out of
the system. That doesn't get it all, however, because air gets trapped in
the cooling passages of the cylinder head on the engine side of the
thermostat. There's only a very small hole in the t-stat, so I leave the
solid cap loose as I run the motor, and that helps work more air out. When
the coolant starts to heat up, the thermostat will start to open, but the
coolant will start to expand out of the opening at that point, so you'll
need to replace the cap at that point. And, you may need to add coolant
after running the engine for a while. Always add coolant at the
radiator/head, and only add to the expansion tank if it gets very low.

Hope that helps.
