If you do a workmanlike job with the metal,
there's no harm in a thin coat of filler.
But make SURE it's sealed on the back side- one pinhole
and moisture will ruin your work.  I use seam- sealer over
all my welds, and usually use 2 coats out of sheer paranoia.

But the door that I replaced the bottom 4 inches of (in 1993) has held
up fine... and it was a 'well, we'll see if this works, and replace it
if it doesn't'
sort of job...
